Chromium tanned leather, was invented in the mid 19th century and the cow hides are tanned using chromium sulphate and other chromium salts. The treated hide is more supple and pliable than vegetable-tanned leather and does not discolour or lose its shape as drastically in water as vegetable-tanned cow hides. A greater range of more esoteric colours are possible using chrome tanning.
