Reindeer carpet fur is made of hollowed out hair which has naturally wonderful heat efficiency. Reindeer hides should not be located in the front of an open fireplace or heat supply because extreme heat will cause the hide to dry out and this can then cause the long reindeer hairs to shed and moult. It is recommended that the hide is positioned outside the house for at very least one day in every month.
For general maintenance you should delicately vacuum the hide using a brush accessory to delicately massage the hide rather than a narrower suction attachment since this might result in abnormal loss of the hide’s hair. It is probably just as good to take the rug outdoors and shake it in the traditional way. It should be noted as with most long haired rugs you will probably experience some shedding off of a small amount of hair from these hides.
Given the character of the very long hide fur on a reindeer hide carpet it is advisable that animals are not permitted (in particular cats) to get to attached to of the reindeer carpet, because as we well know they enjoy to dig and paw into the luxuriant pile of the rug and this will cause a loss hair and will lessen its eventual lifespan.
